The Sidney Lanier Poets would lay claim to the 1928 State Championship after running roughshod over eleven foes during the season. The Poets outscored their opponents 366-31 in a season with very few close games. Led by Captain John Cain, who was considered by many the be one of the best high school backs to ever play in the state at that time, would defeat St. Bernard 46-0 to wrap up the unbeaten season. Before over 4,000 spectators in the Cramton Bowl.

Of the thirty-one point allowed during the season the Alabama Freshmen would get thirteen of those. No other opponent would score more than once against the Poets as only Lineville, Alexander City and Dothan were able to cross the goal line.
